GOOD LOOKING FOOD!!!
Well, today I'm eating some serious crow!! She was right!! Debbie, you were right!! Thanks girl!!! I now make a conscious effort to prepare my food so that it "looks" and tastes very good!!
I started taking pics of what I'm eating and decided it may be helpful if I posted some to show what I'm eating. I'll start taking pics of my breakfasts soon...for now it's just lunch and dinner. I don't know if I'll post meal pix everyday, maybe for now a couple times a week. Let me know if it helps or if it's useful for you guys. Thanks.
Here's what I had for lunch on Sunday...
LUNCH:
Cucumber and Tomato Salad with Sardines
Ingredients:
1/2 English cucumber
1/2 tomato
1 can of sardines (in water)
very small amount of thinly sliced onions
black pepper
onion powder
squeeze of lemon juice
I just chop up veggies in a plate, open sardines in same plate (don't drain the water - once seasonned it makes a great dressing) season, then eat. It takes 10 mins tops!!!
How did it taste??
Really good!! Seriously!! I like sardines so for me it was really good and quite filling. I had a glass of water with it and I was good to go!!
Here's what I had for supper (my favourite meal of the day - because I could eat whatever I want as long as it's from the Whole Foods Group with controlled portions)
SUPPER: more fish!!
Fillet of Sole, Broccoli, Spinach and Baked Sweet Potato
Ingredients:
Baked Sweet Potato
Steamed Spinach and Broccoli (seasonned with onion powder and black pepper)
Fillet of Sole -seasonned in a baking dish with onions, garlic, black pepper, a bit of curry powder and bake for 35 minutes (350F)
How did it taste?
Yummy...the fish was quite flavourful and the sweet potato always feels like a dessert for me...so sweet. Again, I follow with a glass or two of water and I'm so satisfied!!
I hope this helps a bit....I don't know exactly how many calories are in these meals but I know it's healthy...and so far I've lost 22 pounds and a ton of inches eating this way! ;)
Until next time....

Well by the time I got home today, I had in excess of 100 requests regarding the article that was to appear in today's paper!! Let me first say sorry for the mix up with the days - my bad on that one!!
Some of you told me that I owe you 25cents; others said I owe $1!! Which is it and why are some of you trying to scam 75 cents off me??? heh?? heh?? kidding!! Just to let you know, you can go to Starbucks or Timmy's for a coffee and read the paper for free or even the library...BUT I UNDERSTAND, you want to keep it and frame it (**smiles**) ;)
On a serious note, the writer from the Citizen contacted me today to confirm that they WILL BE RUNNING OUR STORY...the editor likes it (YEAH!!) and they want to ensure it gets good exposure!! So it may be in Saturday's paper...In any event she will confirm the day and details with me on Friday....I will keep you all posted!!

Just a reminder to check the paper (The Ottawa Citizen) tomorrow. I think it will be the Health or Lifestyles section. Thanks!!!
Cardio and Coincidences...
Just a quick post today....
Well tomorrow is Weigh in Wednesday and as usual, I'm anxious to see the number on that scale...even though I know I'm doing well. I just fit into a winter coat that I couldn't just 2 short months ago. I feel fabulous about that!!
I don't believe in coincidences!
Also, the news paper article is supposed to be published tomorrow...coincidence that it falls on Weigh in Wednesday???? I THINK NOT! I'm still in a bit of disbelief that this journey was picked up by the papers. Even though I was interviewed, had pictures taken, etc., part of me still has the "I'll believe it when I see it mentality!!" But Wow!! I said I wanted to be accountable and that the more people aware of this story, the better...well, looks like I'm about to become accountable to whole lot more people!!
Yesterday, I did the new training program(phase 2 in the progressive program) for the second time...MAN!! My heart was just pumping!! It's a really awesome feeling... I could .feel every muscle working.
Also on Sunday, I decided to change up my cardio a bit as well. Before, I would hop on a machine (treadmill, bike, elliptical), set it at a decent pace, and push through for 20 minutes...I'd be sweating after!! Anyway, my trainer spoke a little about interval training and I did a bit of research (trusty internet) and came across a 20 minute interval cardio workout. I basically push myself really hard for a minute and recover for the next two minutes and continue on until the end, increasing the level of intensity a bit for each of minute that I'm pushing to the max!! Well I tried it on Sunday and holy crap was it ever hard, I was sweating like you wouldn't believe, really feeling AND BURNT WAY MORE CALORIES (about 50 more!!!)..So that's what I'll be doing from now on with my cardio. Jillian Michaels (the trainer from the Biggest Loser TV show has one similar to this as well). Mine looks kind of like this:
0:00 - 3:oo minutes (warm up) level 2
3:00 - 4:00 minutes (push) level 5
4:00 - 6:00 minutes (recover) level 3
6:00 - 7:00 minutes (push) level 5.5
7:00 - 9:00 minutes (recover) level 3
9:00 -10:00 mins (push) level 6
10:00-12:00 mins (recover) level 3
12:00-13:00 mins (push) level 6.5
13:00-15:00mins (recover) level 3
15:00-16:00 mins (push) level 7
16:00-18:00 mins (recover) level 3
18:00-19:00mins (push) level 6
19:00 -22:00 mins (cool down) level 3
It's HARD!! But I like how I feel when I'm done!
ROB - Tell me what you think of this please....
Anyway, I said this would be a short post so that's it for now, until tomorrow am when I post the weight loss results...
Until then,
Joania (2KMINE!!)

Joania (2000 MINE!!!)
New Training Program
Well, I'm approaching a turning point in my journey. Tomorrow morning, I'll be meeting with my trainer to get my new training program (Phase 2). This program should incorporate more exercises using free weights. I'm a bit nervous (as I usually am when starting something new), but excited nonetheless. I will be meeting him at 9:00 and I'll be sure to fill you in when I return.
On another note, I may have some big news to share in the next day or so...stay tuned!
Wish me luck tomorrow..I'm sure I'll be feeling some pain and breaking a sweat!

Cinnamon or Cinnabon
So, on Wednesday, I was walking through the mall. I had just had a salad with grilled chicken breast (no dressing) and a bottle of water from Subway and I was feeling good. I was actually looking for a new purse/bag. So I just kept on walking, in and out of various stores when all of a sudden, I stop dead in my tracks. I was almost scared to take another step. There she was, right in front of me!!! Who, you may be wondering?? Oh I'll tell ya!! It was the lady from the Cinnabon store and that's not the worst part. To top it off, not only was she standing in front of me with a very pleasant and INVITING smile.....SHE HAD A TRAY FILLED WITH PIECES OF CINNABONS SLATHERED IN ICING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now I don't know if you're all familiar with Cinnabon...let me enlighten you..It's a cinnamon roll described as follows: "Warm dough, filled with our legendary Cinnamon, topped with freshly made cream cheese frosting" or Caramel Pecan Bun (my fav!!) described as, "Warm dough, filled with our legendary Cinnamon, topped with pecans and smothered with rich caramel.
Take a look at these pictures....imagine the wonderful aroma that accompanies these babies!!
So this is what I was faced with, only they were cut up in perfect bite sized pieces with a toothpick stuck in it..my head was spinning, the aroma was amazing, my mouth was watering....she (cinnabon lady) approached and said, "would you like to try one?"....OMG!! Why is she asking me that question!?!?!? She's not a very big lady, rather petite actually and probably late 40's. She's so sweet, I can't hurt her feelings by not taking one, can I????
I started to rationalize. I remembered my trainer saying that Cinnamon is really good for you and really good when you're eating healthy...back then I was certain he said Cinnamon, but at this moment, my memory became fuzzy...did he really say Cinnamon or did he say Cinnabon!!!???!! I know he said cinnamon, of course he said cinnamon.....Again I heard, "would you like to try one?"
"Yes, thank you!" I said and grabbed one and quickly popped it into my mouth before I could give it another thought . I swear, I died and went to heaven the instant that sugar hit my tongue, then I quickly came backto earth and thought to myself, "oh crap, your ass is in for it now!!" I wanted more..I wanted 2 buns or 4...holy crap, I have to get out of here...why won't my legs move!! "MOVE Legs!! Move!!" but nothing. I just stood there staring at the Cinnabon shop like a friggin zombie!! "Run Fat Girl, Run!!! (not being mean, just quoting one of my favourite movies, Run Fatboy, Run!!) still nothing. I had to get out of there. I know that if I made it to the counter, it would be on!!
Finally, I saw this guy walking by with a subway bag and I remembered what I had for lunch, then I started thinking about my journey and my goals and not wanting to fall off the wagon. I told myself to be satisfied with the puny morcel that I did have (and I mean puny - but delicious nonetheless). I guess the Cinnabon lady noticed that I was still standing there, so she approached me again and asked, "would you like to try the pecan caramel one??"
"NO THANKS!!!" I practically screamed and took off like UsainBolt !! I was out of there!! Thank goodness.
Now, how did I feel about the morcel eating?? It didn't bother me one bit...I laughed about it on my way home!! I know I burnt any calories from it with that sprint to get out of there!!
Just thought I'd share that.

To Eat or Not to Eat (My Eating Plan)
I previously outlined my workout / exercise plan and now it's time to tell you what I eat or at least try to eat on a daily basis. First off my trainer stressed the importance of eating properly to the success of this program and to my journey as a whole.
I am a carbohydrate-sugar addict. No surprises there - I've always known. I don't care much for chips or pretzels, french fries (except McDonalds)!! I could do without the salt. But when it comes to the sweets, and I mean anything from cakes, cookies, donuts, ice cream and not to mention chocolate - chocolate anything!!! That's my problem, I'm weak!! So of course I knew all of those goodies had to go if I wanted to see any success with this program. They wouldn't be gone forever, I just have to be disciplined for a while until I learn how to properly and moderately incorporate some of these foods back into my diet. Let's get real, THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL that I plan to live the rest of my life without ever having chocolate or sweets again. That just wouldn't work for this girl!!
So what am I eating??
Well right now, I'm eating a lot of veggies (spinach, lettuce, broccoli, cucumbers, green peppers) and lean meats (chicken, turkey, beef, fish). I'm on a low carb diet. The carbs that I do ingest are from healthy foods like sweet potatoes and broccoli. I've been trying (so hard) to stay away from sugar, flour, salt, breads, white pastas, rice, potatoes (regular), processed foods, fast foods, fruit juices, soda, alcohol (that was hard). What's left??? Suprisingly a lot. When I say "low carb"I certainly don't mean "NO CARB" because as my trainer says, we need carbs to live, function....
Above is a pic of what I pack to take to work. Morning Snack - 1 hardboiled egg; Lunch (a spinach and cucumber salad with tuna fish and EVOO, vinegar and red pepper flake dressing - which I made myself); Afternoon Snack - cucumber slices and almonds...the only thing not in the shot is my water (I have four 800ml water bottles- one in my car, one at work, one at home and one in my purse).
So here's a sample of a day in the life of the new and improving Joania:
- Wake up and workout ( one day 1hr 15 mins, the other 20mins and I just keep alternating)
- Drink Water - I usually drink about 800mls by the time I'm done the workout
- Make Breakfast - {2-3 egg omlette with chopped green peppers and onions (very little)- YUMMY (really it is) and 500ml of water.
- Off to work
- Morning Snack - {Celery sticks with Almond butter (I'm loving almond butter - never thought I would)} about 500 ml of water
- Lunch - usually a salad (baby spinach, spring mix or romaine lettuce base) with a lean meat (chicken breast, turkey, or lean beef, sometimes shrimp) and 800ml of water
- Afternoon Snack - a few almonds (raw, unsalted, unsweetened, unchocolated - *heehee*) or some cucumber slices, some cheese or even a few slices of lean meat. Just enough to get me to supper time AND about 500 ml of water
- Go to daycare to pick up son and then home
- Dinner - This is my favourite meal of the day. This is where I can pretty much have what I want as long as it's a whole food and the portion is balanced. I usually have baked or roasted chicken with steamed mixed veggies and a baked sweet potato - YUMMY and this meal is really good!! Seriously!! Sometimes I make a 3 egg omlette and load it with veggies (mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes and some cheese - really good). This is where i have pasta some times but it's whole grain pasta and a very small amount!! Also 500ml of water
- Evening Snack - Usually a cup of peppermint or cinnamon tea (unsweetened of course)...
- OFF to bed to do it all over again the next day.
As you can see I try to drink at least 3.5 to 4 litres of water. I'm not sure that you have to drink all that water but for me, I use the consume that much liquid in a day (just that most of it was either juice or pop and probably only 500 ml of water)!! So I decided to just sub water (around the same amount) every where I'd normally have a drink. DRAWBACK: Frequent Bathroom Visits - I visit the bathroom more often than when I was pregnant!! Question: How come I never had to pee as much when I was drinking soda and juice???
There are so many other different options of what I can eat that were provided by my trainer Rob (http://www.laganafitness.com/). Contact him if you're interested and the best part is that the plan is individually customized for you and it's also progressive...so it will change (can't get bored !)
I hope that helps a bit and sheds a bit of light on HOW I'm losing the weight. I must say that this is very difficult to do but it's a matter of living a healthy life or not for me!! So I just try my best to stay focused and not stray....SPEAKING OF STRAYING.....please see my next post titled, Cinnamon or Cinnabon!! :)

Week 6 Weigh In......1 lb Down!!!!!!!
So here we go...
Starting Weight: 258 lbs (Dec 10/08)
Last Weigh In: 240 lbs (Jan 14/09)
Current Weight: 239 lbs
This Week's Loss: 1 lb
Ok, so the scale only says 1 pound down but my clothes are saying so MUCH MORE!! Most of my pants are loose, some (my previous "baggy pants") are practically falling off me... I FEEL FABULOUS and so STRONG!! I am starting to "SEE" muscle now (not crazy muscle, but muscle).
So although I would love to see a 3 plus pounds loss on the scale, I am very happy with the physical differences thusfar.
I have so much to talk about, from my journey, to my meal plan to Barack Obama...so much...I will pop back on tonight...
1 more pound gone!! WHOOOO HOOOOO!! AND I'VE ACHIEVED MY FIRST MILESTONE...I WEIGH LESS THAN 240lbs...for that, I'm thrilled!! YEAH BABY!!!!

From "I Have a Dream" to "Yes We Can!!"
"I have a dream," the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. proclaimed from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Aug. 28, 1963, "that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed — 'We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."'

I am NOT a CHEATER and I don't want to be!!!
Then I started thinking to myself, "who the heck came up with this "cheating" concept anyway? Why does it have to be called "cheating" if you slip up and have something sweet whilst on your healthy journey?" What if you have a small sweet morcel and then got right back on track? Why do you have to feel so guilty about it?? Should I feel guilty about it?
Well, to answer that, I first needed to examine what's affiliated with the word "cheat". It's a very negative word that brings to mind thoughts of people sneaking around in a very dingy and cheap-pay-per-hourly-use motel just to get their freak on!!! I looked up the definition of the word "cheat" in my trusty Webster's dictionary and found the following:
- to deprive of something valuable by the use of deceit or fraud
- to influence or lead by deceit, trick or artifice
- to practice fraud or trickery
- to violate rules dishonestly
If I stray a bit, I don't want to consider it cheating. I mean, maybe I can PLAN to go slightly off the plan. Maybe I need to work it into the plan (ROB, I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS ONE!). ALSO, I want to call it my "C'EST LA VIE DAY" (c'est la vie is French for "That's Life!"). So that I don't have guilt and bad thoughts/feelings associated with it. I don't want to feel like I'm weak for having a little something that is not outlined in my plan, no GUILT- I'm in control of myself!! I'm not getting OFF my plan, I'll get right back on track!!
I mean, I realize this isn't something I could do every week but maybe once a month or once every two months!! I know that part of the reason I have all this weight to shed is because of the way I've been eating and I want to get away from that but I also have to be realistic, I want to learn how to deal with these foods that will more than likely tempt me for the rest of my existence!
Okay, that's my rant for today...I would love your comments and advice. I'm hoping my trainer Rob will read this and post something (and by something, I mean telling me that he will see about working in a "C'est La Vie Day" into my plan) **smiles**

Week 5 Weigh-In...2lbs DOWN!!!
Starting Weight: 258 lbs (Dec 10/08)
Last Weigh In: 242 lbs (Jan 7/09)
Current Weight: 240 lbs
This Week's Loss: 2 lbs
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Another week, and 2 more pounds gone!!! I had a rough night last night craving nothing but chocolates but thankfully, just knowing I had this weigh-in this morning, kept me from doing a late night chocolate run! Thank goodness!! So I'm down another two pounds and feeling fabulous.
If all goes to plan, my goal is to lose another 2 pounds next week. IF (I mean WHEN) that happens, it will be a huge milestone for me!!! It will be the first time I'm out of the 240's in I don't even know how long. I know that before getting pregnant I weighed 246 (that's about 3 years ago). I really can't remember the last time I weighed under 240!! It's very exciting...so I'm hoping that the possibility of reaching that goal will be enough to keep me motivated (I HOPE).
I'm starting to notice big changes in my clothes, especially my pants. I'm finding that they are getting quite loose and baggy. It's a weird but wonderful feeling. With a few of my pants, I can actually slide them on and off WITHOUT undoing the button and/or zipper - it's awesome. Just feeling the fabric moving against my legs when I walk instead of that constricting feeling. Also, there's less of a "swishing" noise when I walk. I even have to wear a belt with some of them.
Another thing which makes me just want to scream, "BRA-LLELUHIA!!!!!!!!" is, that my bra is getting loose which means the boobs are shrinking....I hope they shrink to the point where I'd never need to wear a bra again. They have got to be the most uncomfortable things ever made to man!!
Anyway, I'm very happy with the loss this week and I'm going to push for more!!! 240!! Yeah!!!

Chocolate Brain
Anyway, I've been working really hard this week, trying to capitalize on the momentum and motivation gained from the pics. My workouts have been awesome, HOWEVER, I have been having some horrid cravings!! Bad ones, really bad; worse than when I was even pregnant!! I just can't get the thought of rich, milky, creamy chocolate off my mind. I know that's where it is ...ON MY DAMN MIND!!! My body doesn't need it or want it, but in my head, I just can't stop thinking about it. It's nuts, I find myself thinking of chocolate constantly!!! It's not just chocolate bars or pieces, I mean chocolate cake, chocolate ice cream, chocolate cheesecake....chocolate gosh darn bananas!!!! Am I crazy?? I must be crazy! I can literally close my eyes and taste it, but that's just not good enough. I've been chugging some serious water....NOT WORKING!!! I've brushed my teeth (okay mostly sucked toothpaste), several times...NOT WORKING!!! BTW, why hasn't Crest or Colgate created a chocolate flavoured toothpaste???? Or have they already done it and I'm just unaware??????????? It's now just a head game....I CAN NOT CAVE!
Even if I decide right this moment that I'm going to have some chocolate, I'm screwed, I've got nothing in this house. I'd have to get dressed, warm up the car, because it's freezing outside and then drive to the store...not worth it!! Is it?? No, not worth it!! Okay, I'm gonna have some almonds...before, I used to suck all the chocolate off of Chocolate Almonds and eat the nuts after.....maybe eating these raw almonds will trick my mind into thinking I've already had the chocolate.
AARRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
BOOTCAMP
So I've been getting some questions about the bootcamp links I have on this blog (http://www.orleansbootcamp.com/, http://www.kanatabootcamp.com/). I decided to do this post about bootcamp, because I believe this is the program (and the people) that helped set me on the path I am currently to becoming healthy and fit.
In my very first post, I mentioned that back in July 2008, I started my quest to lose weight. One of the things I did was bootcamp and I loved it!!! I came accross an ad in the paper for this outdoor bootcamp program and decided to try it out. I signed up and was hooked. It is an effective program as well, I lost 23 pounds and a ton of inches in about 4 months. It is a lot of fun and quite addictive. The women are awesome and make it so enjoyable - very supportive environment. I was 270 pounds when I started and I never felt left out or left behind in the program. They work indoors in the fall/winter and outdoors in the spring and summer. The only reason, I stopped was due to my work schedule and the indoor camp hours. However, i have all intentions of returning in the spring when they return outdoors.
It's a different type of program. Just another way to incorporate fitness into your lives. Change from the daily gym visit (break the monotony). I'm on this journey to get to my goal right now and I have no doubt that I will get there. Part of my success will also include the ability to maintain the weight loss and improved level of fitness and this bootcamp program is one of the ways I plan on doing that in addition to the work I'm currently doing with Rob...so check it out!! If you're looking for a different, fun alternative to working out in the gym and live in the Ottawa area (orleans or kanata), check out the website (click on the title of this post, it links right to the site).
The owner and lead trainer(Adrian - super nice guy, knowledgeble and also passionate about fitness) makes the program challenging and changes it up pretty well everyday. It's a lot of fun.
Check out this ad, it shows a bit of what the program is like:

The Pics Are Out - Here's What I Noticed...
I received such awesome feedback/comments from everyone - Thank you all!! I've also had a few questions, but here is the answer to what was my favourite question thus far:
"NO!! I'm NOT wearing a gurdle or spanx in this picture! I'm wearing the exact same outfit I wore on Dec 10/08, including same underwear and bra!!!!" I literally take it off, WASH it and put it away for a month!!
Anyway, here are 10 differences (physical that is) I noticed in this month's pictures:
- My butt is getting smaller and more shapely (whoohoo..on my way to being even more bootylicious than I thought I was!)
- My boobs are smaller (my husband's getting worried)
- I HAVE A WAIST AGAIN!! WHOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!! (Well it's on its way back)
- I've lost not one, BUT TWO sets of rolls on my back!! Oh Yeah!!
- My face is smaller
- A little space is slowly starting to reappear between my legs!
- My shoulders and arms are shrinking.
- My "Backboobs" are shrinking and I TOTALLY hope they DISAPPEAR!!!
- My legs look longer (that's because my gut is shrinking, hence my shorts can be properly pulled up, exposing more of my hot legs!!) ;))
- I LOOK taller! :)
The one thing that stayed just as big is my heart and I hope it never loses any weight!! My heart is truly filled with joy right now at my progress, the fact that I've remained committed and determined to succeed. I am also very happy and grateful to have such supportive people behind me, in my corner, beside me, having my back on a regular basis. Thank you all so much for all the support, kind words, words of encouragement and offers to kick my butt when I need it!! THANK YOU!!
I am even more committed to see this through and just can't wait for next month's pics...Feb 10 is closer than it seems!!!!

One Month Anniversary Pics...
Now here I stand. I've completed one solid month of proper dieting and exercise; doing it the right way!! I'm so proud of this accomplishment because it gives me a little more hope that I will make it to the finish line. This is unchartered territory for me and so far, I'm excited, nervous, proud, pumped and I'm loving it!!
Anyway, I give you my first anniversary pics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please be honest guys!! If you don't see much of a difference tell me!! Tell me!! Personally I see a huge difference but I won't say where until a later post (I'm quite emotional today). I just want to see if you guys notice a difference or same as me, or not at all... I am very happy with the progress thus far!!! Wow and to think, I lost only (not ONLY, but in the grand scheme of things - 16 pounds)!! What a difference 16 pounds makes.

EXERCISE...I'm Not Allergic!!
Well, I've been getting a lot of questions about what I'm doing and how I'm losing this weight. I want to again assure everyone that this is not some crazy fad diet or anything like that. I'm working my ass off everyday and it's also a mental battle for me to stay on track with my food (see my posts titled, "Stronger than a BIGMAC" or "Yummy toothpaste???"). I'm doing this naturally by eating healthy foods and using quality customized exercises. I'm not taking any diet pills or caffeine pills or those ones that promise to shed 25 pounds in two days!! I take a multi vitamin everyday and that's it!!!
For quite a long time my own personal motto was, "Joania -addicted to chocolate, allergic to exercise!!" Well, had I continued down that crazy path, who knows?,
After completing my first month of seriously working out (everyday or at the very least, 6 days a week), I've actually started to enjoy exercising. Believe it or not, it gives me energy, a little extra pep in my day (almost as good as what those chocolate bars used to do for me - mmm Snickers, KitKat - but the "exercise energy" lasts longer). Seriously, I'm starting to really enjoy my workouts, it makes me feel strong, you should see the posing going on after I finish my set of push-ups (Hulk Hogan has nothing on me)....it's awesome!! NOW please don't get me wrong.
Exercise doesn't come easy to me at all. Every morning I have to FORCE myself to get started, talk myself into doing it, remind myself why I'm doing it. It takes great effort on my part to get going but once I get started, it's usually okay!! So I've come to realize that I'm not at all allergic to exercise, I just needed the right motivation, tools, support and guidance to get my lazy ass moving!! So here's what I do:
A Customized Training Program - 3 times a week (1 hour)
The picture included above is the actual items (which I'm calling, "MY FIVE") that I've used every second day since starting this journey on December 10, 2008.
MY FIVE:
- The Exercise Ball - it looks harmless, but used under the guidance and instruction of my trainer Rob, it becomes a very deadly tool. Highly effective. Pain, but it gets results.
- Weights - helps to build the muscles (they're there, somewhere!)
- Mat - a little added comfort and support
- Water - can't do without it!! All day. The first thing I drink in the morning and last thing I drink before I go to bed! A must have during the work out. Very important to keep hydrated throughout the day. It will help with the weightloss (I'm putting it to the test).
- Sneakers - comfort and support.
- treadmill
- elliptical
- bike
- walking
- cycling
- jogging
- swimming, etc.
So for example, today (Thursday) was my cardio day, so I power walked on the treadmill for 20 mins (that's it). My program is progressive so as time passes, the intensity, difficulty will change (more than likely increase). Sometimes I use the elliptical, or the stationary bike. If it's not too cold, I go for a brisk walk/slight jog outside. I also want to incorporate swimming and other different activities in there soon so I don't get bored.
Tomorrow, I will do my training program using "My Five", which includes weights, core training, balance training and a lot of exercises using my own body weight (like push ups, bridges etc.)Then on Saturday, it's back to Cardio. I've just continued on, day after day and before I knew it, one month was completed!!
Now, I won't get ridiculously specific with the exercises from my training program because, remember I am using a personal trainer and out of respect for him (and the great stuff he does), and his business I don't think it would be fair to do so. To his credit, he's very open and helpful, he has a great website (http://www.laganafitness.com/) full of very useful tips and you can always contact him for additional info. Sign up with him, it WILL be worth it! Join ME!! :)
ROB - If you wanted to post some tips or anything else here or on the Facebook page, please feel free or not..totally up to you!
So that's pretty well it for exercising... That's the secret!! A lot of hard work, I've developed a serious passion for what I'm doing and proper eating!! That's how I lost 16 pounds in 4 weeks!! I will describe a typical day with me and this new lifestyle, including what I eat in a future post - so stay tuned.
It is definitely a combined effort of proper eating and exercise...they go hand in hand. I'm quickly realizing that!
Hope that helps and inspires you to get started or at least get you thinking of getting started! :)

Stronger than a BIG MAC!!!!
I went to the McDonald's drive through today (why, I think I convinced myself that my son wanted it, or something), I rolled down my window and waited for that distorted voice to say, "welcome to McDonalds, may I take your order?" I took a deep breath and said, "uh, yeah, uh, can I uh have a 4-pc chicken nugget happy meal with apple juice for a boy (you gotta specify the gender so you get the right toy - my husband would definitely have that "WTF" look on his face if he walked in and saw our 2yr old son playing with a Barbie).
Anyway, the voice in the box then said, "anything else?"....there was a long, akward silence. In the past the next words out of my mouth would've been, "BigMac combo with supersize fries and a Coke, no ice please..oh and an Apple Pie (I always say, "OH and an apple pie" as if I forgot or something when I knew all along that I would order it). My mind was racing, I start rationalizing in my head, "it's just me and my two year old in the car, hubby's at work, won't be home for hours, I could eat and destroy the evidence before he even gets close to home, no one would ever know, he wouldn't even smell it" Again I hear, "Anything else???" .....I quickly answer, "uh, just a minute please", I continue thinking some more.
At this point I'm talking softly to myself, "Joania, what are you doing, say NO THANK YOU!! say NO THANK YOU!!! Remember your Journey, your journey!!!" The voice comes back on, "Ma'am, anything else?"....."Uh, I wou--, uh I don't think so!" She then tells me the total and I drive to the next window. I know I've been happy to see the McDonalds girl in the past but this time it was for a different reason. It wasn't because my mouth was salivating for that Big Mac, it was beacuase I stayed strong!! When she slid that little window to take the cash...I smiled and said like an idiot, "phew, I didn't order anything, I didn't order anything!" She looked at me with a puzzled face which I interpreted as, "please don't make me cancel this order". When I realized what I said, I quickly corrected myself and said, "I didn't order anything ELSE ..THANK YOU..." I'm such a dork!
Anyway, I drove to the next window, picked up the bag, which btw looked so small compared to the one's I got when I ordered food as well.
When we got home, I gave my son his McDonalds, AND HERE COMES THE SHOCKER, it DID NOT bother me one bit, I sat beside him eating my baked sweet potato, piece of grilled fish and some steamed veggies. IT was awesome, I felt so good and strong. I DIDN'T EVEN SWIPE A FRY, Y'ALL!!! Trust me, I'd tell you if I did...but I didn't even swipe a french fry, not one!! This may be no big deal for most, but for me...HUGE!!!
So that's why I say this month has made me so much stronger and seeing how far I've come, I really don't want to jeopardize that in anyway. Also, the thought of having to confess to all my blog readers is enough to keep me on the straight and narrow.
Anyway, just thought I'd share that. Also, I've received a lot of questions like, "16 pounds!!???!? What are you doing??" "That's a lot of weight, how did you do it??"" "16 pounds? wow, please share the secret!"
So I decided to be a bit more specific with what I'm doing. I'll write it up in my next post. Thanks for stopping by!!

Anything from McDonalds, DQ, Lasagna - or any other type of Italian food or pasta, Gabriel's Meat Lovers Pizza with extra cheese, Kim H's Cream Cheese Skor Bit Caramel Apple Dip (OMG YUM!!), Kim H's Baileys Cheese Cake, As a matter of fact, ANYTHING Kim H makes or bakes - believe it or not she makes great salads too, Ribs! Ribs! Ribs!!, ox tail with rice and peas, fried plantain and sweet potatoes, Margaret's Baked Mac and Cheese and Chocolate Chip Cookies, any Cheese Cake, Chocolate Cake, Any cake! Apple pie and ice cream, butter tarts, brownies, ice cream of any flavour, especially heavenly hash and cookie dough, chocolate bars... I really need to move to on to the next question, bad thoughts are coming to mind!!
Favorite person(s) to talk to in 2008? It's a toss up between a few people actually. My cousin Bridget and my cousin Marvela (they're sisters). Bridget, because we always have a good time when we talk and Marvela because I've just come to appreciate our relationship so very much! I love them both so much. My friend Janet cause we can always laugh till we cry (or pee). Margaret because it's always real and interesting and my husband because after all these years he can still get me to smile.
Favorite trip in 2008? North Carolina (Appleby's)
Most exciting moment(s) in 2008? Barack Obama, celebrating with my cousin as she closed on her first home, losing 8 pounds in my first week of this journey.
Funniest moment(s) in 2008? My two year old son saying, "Where's peanuts Mommy, peek-a-boo peanuts!"...peanuts is the name he uses for his "private part", you know, penis - peanuts, no big difference! LOL!!

Almost to the end of MONTH ONE!! Wow!
What I know for sure is that I am truly blessed for so many reasons:
- I have an awesome family (which includes a very loving and supportive not to mention pretty hot hubby and the most wonderful little boy anyone could ask for).
- I have wonderful friends!!
- I have excellent support (and I thank everyone of you for sticking with me and regularly checking in with my progress - it means so much to me and it's helping me stay on track).
- I am definitely going to see this journey through to the end (with the assistance, the knowledge and guidance of my trainer) and I'm more determined than ever!!
- I am also more committed than ever to this journey.
I've realized that if I'm ever going to resolve this issue with my weight, I need to KICK ITS ASS REAL GOOD and PERMANENTLY!! You know how sometimes in life you come across some annoying person, who deep down inside you just know, that all they need is a good ass-kicking and they'll be gone???? Well, that's how I've come to feel about my weight!! Now, I'm not promoting violence or anything, it's just that sometimes, a little ass-kicking does a body good!***smiles***My whole weight problem is just annoying and needs to go!!! So this is the year that I plan to say good ridance!!! I'm done!!
Enough of my ranting...When I step on that scale on Wednesday, regardless of what it reads (unless I gain weight- then I'd be ticked off), I will feel good. I DO FEEL GOOD!! I'm on the right path and I am so excited for the future! I plan to enjoy this ride!
So, take care all. Thanks for stopping by and enjoy your week! :) Until Wednesday...
Joania
Music
I've added a playlist of a few songs I like to listen to. It starts up automatically when you visit this blog, however, if you'd prefer to have silence as you view the blog, just scroll to the bottom of the page and press the "pause" key of the music player. If you do want to listen to music, let it play and/or scroll down and select whichever song you'd like to listen to.
DISCLAIMER: I can be a total corn ball at times and that will sometimes be obvious in my choice of songs, HOWEVER, there are some good songs on here. If you have any song suggestions, feel free to send them in comments - if I can I will upload them! :)
Thanks and have a great day!!

Two-Thousand-MINE!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
2009 will be MINE, in fact from now on, I'm calling it "Two-thousand-MINE"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've just returned from meeting and working out with my trainer today and I feel AWESOME!! I feel so strong and just good. I almost can't put it into words. I'm so excited and happy, it's almost like I'm on some sort of high - my trainer says it's endorphins (don't know if I spelled that right)!! Whatever it is, this is just such a good feeling. I've been humming and singing R.Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" all day - I know, it's corny but it's true..that's what's on my mind!! It's wonderful! I'm such a cornball!!:)
Rob (trainer) was pleased with my progress thus far but he killed my arms/shoulders today by adding a few extra boxing moves to the routine...My arms were just burning and shaking..it was crazy. What's really cool, is that I'm starting to notice some definition in my arms, legs, neck...I can't wait to see my pics..I'm really hoping the changes will be visible. I can't believe the differences I'm feeling in such a short period of time. I'm breathing so much easier than before and you should see me run up and down these stairs in my house! Even my sleep has improved, I hardly toss and turn anymore, I'm out as soon as my head hits that pillow.
I'm a different woman. It's only been 3 weeks. Wednesday will be my 4th weigh-in (one month already) and a few days later on the 10th, I will take my first anniversary progress pic. I'm getting excited and nervous!
I gotta tell you guys that when I first started the workout program, with certain exercises (squats)my knees were cracking worse than my grandma's (I love her so much)...the cracking was so loud and my legs/knees were so weak that I couldn't stop shaking or even balance on one leg. Today, I did those same exercises and you wouldn't believe how much stronger I was AND, NO CRACKING IN THE KNEES, my balance was incredible - it was nuts!!!I'm truly amazed at how well and how quickly the body adapts itself. I guess it's true - I take care of my body and my body in turn takes care of me!!
So that's it, just wanted to drop by give a little update..things are going well. Actually, it's fabulous - I really feel that this is my year!! TWO-THOUSAND MINE, BABY!!!!! I'm still pushing through!! Thanks for all the support guys, I hope you all realize just how much it helps me!!!Thanks again!

Happy New Year Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I woke up this morning and did my workout!! Wow!! I woke up on New Year's Day and did my workout!! This is probably the first New Year's day that I woke up and haven't been hung over wanting McDonalds (Big Mac, fries, chocolate shake and an apple pie to be exact or a greasy , yummy meat lover's pizza with double cheese from Gabriel's!). This is also the first time in my life, that I've woken up on NY's day and not reached for my pad and paper to proceed with "my resolutions". It's awesome, the one thing I want to resolve most in 2009, I've already began to tackle (or should I say attack!!! :) I feel awesome just to know that I am already on my way. This is what I want and I am going after it!!
I know that this is the time for resolutions, so lets all decide what it is we want most out of this New Year and just go for it....like the Nike ad, JUST DO IT!! Don't think about it, just make the decision and follow through!! If you want to start exercising and need a trainer, pick up the phone, go online and call one...I KNOW A GREAT ONE (http://www.laganafitness.com/) check out his site....TRUST ME, he will set you on the right path.
Share your goals with friends and family, get a great support system in place to ensure that you see this through.
I find that we do so much for everyone else and always seem to neglect ourselves. We're worth it to invest time and effort in ourselves!! I would love it if everyone who wanted to lose weight, get healthy or fit or just shed a few pounds would join me on this journey. I've got a LONG LONG way to go, but I KNOW I will get there and you can too...
I'm no weight loss guru or anything, just a regular woman embarking on this awesome and difficult journey - but I know the rewards will be fantastic when I get to the end. As Muhammud Ali (who I just adore) says, "don't quit, suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion!" That's my intent, champ!!
Anyway, my hope and wish for the New Year is that you all have a fabulous New Year!!!! Again, thanks for all the support!!
