2KMINE - My Year in Review

Wow!! I can't believe 2010 is only a few hours away!! This past year has been one of the most interesting, exciting, challenging and satisfying years of my life!!! So much has changed. I have changed, yet I've also stayed the same! I am in such a wonderful and different place than I was a year ago - I never dreamed that I could ever be here and be comfortable here. The ride to this place has been wonderful and intense thus far and I can't wait to see what 2010 will bring.

Before I even begin to reminisce, I want to wish all of you - my blogging friends and family and all who follow and support me on this journey, the VERY BEST OF 2010!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I also want to thank you for the continued support, encouragement and blog love over the past year. I never anticipated the amount of wonderful support I would receive (and friends that I've made) when I started this blog in November 2008. I could NOT have done any of this without your support and blog love! I thank you sincerely!

2KMINE!!!! [Two Thousand Mine (2009)]

Last year I made a very bold statement that I wanted 2009 to be "Two Thousand Mine (2KMINE). Sitting here on the very last few hours of 2009 , I feel that was the case...2009 WAS MINE. Please don't get me wrong - I am not an arrogant person but I really feel that I rocked it this past year and 2009 was MINE! (I'm sure there are millions of others that feel this way as well) :) All I am really trying to say here is that 2009 was one of the most amazing years of my life and I truly feel like I have accomplished so very much!! Here are some of the highlights.
In 2009:
  • I lost 89 pounds!!!!!!!!! That deserves to be repeated...I LOST 89 POUNDS!! :)
  • I reclaimed my life as it relates to living the most healthy lifestyle that I can
  • I improved my quality of life (including that of my family and some friends)
  • I have made fitness a part of my life, permanently
  • I met and worked with the most amazing trainer/nutritionist in Canada, Rob Lagana of (http://laganafitness.com). He provided me with the tools to succeed and CONTINUE on this life long journey
  • I have connected with so many wonderful people on similar journeys. We've built an amazing support system for each other (I love my blog buddies)
  • I RAN my very first (and certainly not last) 5 K (CIBC Run for the Cure, October 4) in 43 minutes, 48 seconds. I cried the entire final kilometre.
  • My weight loss journey was featured in 3 newspapers (the Ottawa Citizen, The Metro & EMC)
  • I was selected as one of the Top 50 people in the capital for Ottawa Life Magazine's Annual Top 50 issue
  • I starred in a national television commercial for ParticipACTION
  • I was part of the Sun Life ParticipACTION Inspire the Nation Tour
  • I was featured on the radio (Live 88.5)
Quite a few more things happened but I'm feeling a little strange tooting my own horn!

2009 was the year in which I learned the value of taking care of myself; the importance of making myself a priority so that I may be able to do all the things I want to do, including being a better mom, wife, friend, etc! I finally learned how to give myself the opportunity to be the best person I could be.

When I weighed 258 pounds:
  • I could barely walk a short distance without becoming breathless, having to "take breaks".
  • I snored like a bear... 89 pounds gone and no more snoring!!
  • I hardly got a restful night of sleep...now my head hits that pillow and I AM OUT! It's a beautiful thing. I am so much more rested.
  • I was convinced I had chronic knee pain or "bad knees"....I was just carrying too much weight because since the loss, my knee pain has vanished. My knees also used to crack with practically each step...no more cracking!
  • Undergarments were VERY uncomfortable....now...AMAZING! :)
  • I couldn't paint my own toe nails!!
  • I couldn't keep up with my toddler...now..well, I still can't keep up...lol!! However, I could hang out significantly longer than before. I'm a FUN mommy now :)
There are so many more benefits that I've seen and continue to see since losing this weight and getting fit. My energy level is through the roof, I can accomplish so much in a day. It is just incredible!

So here I am at what I believe is the beginning of the rest of my life. I am in MAINTENANCE mode...I lost a lot of weight and I do believe that I will lose some more but for the most part, my greatest challenge in this upcoming year will be to maintain this new life stlye. I intend to do all I can to ensure that I make it. I WILL not re-gain this weight!! I am not looking backwards. 2010 will be all about moving forward with my goals on this journey!!! This is my new lifestyle. I want to live this way forever!! I will make fitness and health a priority and KEY PART of my life.

NO RESOLUTIONS, JUST GOALS!!!!!!!!
My health and fitness goals for 2010:
  • MAINTAIN, MAINTAIN, MAINTAIN!!!!
  • Train and run a mini triathlon (possibly June).
  • Run a minimum of 2 Five K's for the year (Ottawa Race Weekend in May and CIBC Run for the Cure in October).
  • Keep up with my weight training session to truly sculpt and define my body/muscles.
  • Join a recreational sports team (Soccer, baseball).
  • Continue with my Martial Arts Training. Become a PRO-Kicker in Kickboxing and advance in Jiu-jitsu
That's it for now, but please note that I will MOST LIKELY be adding to this list as the year goes by and as I attempt new things or become interested in other things!

Overall, for me, 2009 WAS AN INCREDIBLE SUCCESS based on what I've accomplished regarding getting healthy, losing weight and improving my life. I KNOW THAT 2010 WILL BE EVEN BETTER. More to come.

Lastly, at this time, I know there are a lot of people who are resolving that this year, 2010 will be the year that they could finally lose weight. I was in the same boat for so long. I am not an expert however I would like to humbly offer only one bit of advice. Just do it...find the right tools, invest the time, give it AT LEAST a year and STICK to it, YOU ARE WORTH IT!!! You too will be here come December 2010 advising others to do the same.

Until next time which will be 2010!!! HAVE A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

Moving On.....

Yesterday's chocolate covered almond slip is OFFICIALLY in the past!! I rocked out my strength training session today like a mad woman - it was awesome!! I also got in a 30-min jog/walk on the treadmill, which surprisingly felt great. I hadn't gone on a treadmill in a little while since the majority of my cardio over the past few months came from martial arts (kickboxing/jiu-jitsu)! It was really good and I see the benefits of mixing things up every now and then. :)

I can't believe this year is coming to an end!! Two thousand and Nine was truly 2KMINE!!!! I'm working on a special end of year post for tomorrow!! Just incredible how far I've come. I remember this time last year being the first year that I was not making any weight loss resolutions (as I did so many times in the past)...I was about 3 weeks into the journey and look at me now!!

I've been noticing a lot of the weight loss advertisements starting on TV, Radio and print and for once, I'm not thinking of what I need to do to lose this weight! It feels really great to be living in this moment of progressing through my journey!! Wow!! What a difference a year makes!!

Anyway, that's it for today, just wanted to let you guys know that I am back on track today and it feels wonderful.

BTW, I've added a picture of me from the Therien Martial Arts Christmas Party last week. I had such a nice time. This is a pick with one of my Kickboxing Teachers (Ingrid, AKA INTENSE in the pink dress) and one of my sparring partners and new found friend Nicole. I didn't have my camera with me....I had gone straight from work (quick wardrobe change in the bathroom). I wish I got a pic of Sensei Derek - I will in the future! :)

Until next time...

Chocolate Covered Almonds

OH MAN!!! They got me!!! Today, I had what I hope to be one of very few weak moments where chocolate is concerned. I ate very well today with one exception....CHOCOLATE COVERED ALMONDS!!!!!!

I had them on my mind all day for whatever reason and I resisted the urge to go to a store and pick some up until about 230pm when I could take it no more!!! LOL!!! I went to the store and picked up a small package...about 100 grams in weight!! The smallest I could find!! They were ridiculously sweet but there was something about the roasted almonds that made it taste really good!!! I really enjoyed it and wouldn't have felt guilty but I do...I feel guilty because I DID NOT WORK OUT AT ALL TODAY!! Today was supposed to be my cardio day (I usually have a Jiu-jitsu class at lunch time, however the dojo is closed until Jan 4!!!) That's no excuse and I really should have planned for this, but I didn't. Anyway, I slipped up, I acknowledge it and I WILL FIX IT!!

Tomorrow morning, I will hit my strength training session HARDCORE, I will also get a quick 30minute cardio session in as well and just continue along on the journey!!! The routine is a little off with the holiday season and everyone around being in a "festive" mood (myself included) ...but it should all get back to normal next week!! I will make it normal!! :)

That's it for today...
Until next time..

Surviving Santa

Well Christmas Day has come and gone and I must say that after missing out on dinner and treats last year, I was expecting to GO NUTS this year. But, I didn't!! I had a fantastic Christmas! The spread of food was incredible. HOWEVER, I had only one plate..only one plate!! I took a little of everything. One thing I made sure to do was load up on the steamed veggies, spinach, baked sweet potatoes and turkey...that way there was very little room left for all the complex carbs (triple cheese baked macaroni, 2 different types of rice, mashed potatoes, gravy, etc). I had a little of each (just enough for a taste). I was so full. I also had one glass of white wine. For dessert, I had a piece of apple pie and that was it!!!!!!!!!! I felt satisfied and GREAT!

Throughout the last few days, I did nibble here and there on treats (cookies, chocolate etc) but it was nothing crazy. I'm really pleased with how things went!!

I SURVIVED SANTA!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

I stepped on the scale today and I am happy to report that I DID NOT GAIN any weight, however I did not LOSE any either!! I stayed the same and I must say that I am very happy with that.

Now it's back to the grind and realities of life. The journey continues so it's time to put the plans into action!! 2010 is just around the corner...

OH, by the way, you may have noticed that my reward for hitting 170-pound mark (losing 88lbs) is to see a fabulous concert or play...well thanks to my hubby, I will be going to see Alicia Keys perform in March when she comes to town...the tickets were one of my Christmas present!! WHOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Next reward a New York City Shopping trip!!!

Until next time

Enjoy Your Holidays Without Ruining Your Fitness

I found this article on http:/www.active.com and thought it was very useful information.

Written By Rod Dixon and Matt Mahowald

1. Never show up hungry to a holiday party or meal. Make sure you have a big breakfast and enjoy at least two good meals or snacks before the feast. This will minimize the amount of overeating. For instance, 12 almonds and an apple will help to decrease your appetite so that when you get to that meal you don’t overeat.

2. The most important drink during the holiday season is water. Water helps your body synthesize carbs. It helps with the highs and lows of blood sugar that come with desserts and sweets that aren’t normally in our diet.

3. If you are going to attend a holiday party and plan on drinking alcohol, consume a full eight to 10 oz. of water in addition to a beverage of your choice. This will minimize the amount of alcohol you drink.

4. When eating appetizers or enjoying a potluck-style meal, the best choices are vegetables, lean proteins and fruits. If you’re designated to bring a dish to a gathering, bring something healthy. You never know what’s going to be there for you, and it’s important to have good options.

5. Fill your plate modestly, and wait 30 minutes after you finish before going back for seconds. This allows your blood sugar and insulin levels to adjust. You may find that you aren’t really hungry for that second plate.

6. Look at dessert as a treat. Serve yourself a small portion, and stop there.

7. A good cardiovascular workout for two to three days after your holiday will help deplete the excess storage of carbs and fat that you picked up during the holiday.

8. If it’s possible, throw in an extra two days of 30 minute cardiovascular activity. Remember that walking is just as good as a slow jog and easier on your body.

9. Consistency is key to your exercise program. Don’t let the holidays derail you by missing too many days of your routine. Don’t try to make up what you’ve missed by over-training—just get back on your plan.

10. Remember that it is a holiday, so let yourself enjoy it. The following day wake up and get right back on your food plan and exercise.

Dangerously Wonderful

Hey bloggies...

I had a slice of home-made chocolate strawberry cheesecake today and it truly scared the living daylights out of me. It was sooooooooooooo good, that it was dangerously wonderful!!! Wonderful because the flavors just erupted on my tongue - it was amazing, and the texture was OH MY GOSH!!. In yesterday's post, I mentioned that I had a choco-mint hard candy and could not stand the sweetness...well let me tell you I HAD NO PROBLEMS with this piece of sweetness today. I guess the fact that this cheesecake was home made had something to do with the wonderful taste versus the processed candy!!

I said it was DANGEROUSLY wonderful because of just how good it tasted. I immediately wanted another piece and that serioiusly scared me!! Why was I not satisfied with the one piece...I wasn't hungry or anything, at that point it was all about the taste in my mouth!! I had to have a little mental pep talk with myself so that I wouldn't have another piece and thankfully I didn't. It's almost like I had a glimpse of "Joania before" who would have had 2 slices and possibly 3, depending on the size!! I'm glad I was able to refuse but it got me thinking...I have to stay on top of this game plan, this LIFE PLAN!! I allowed myself a piece and that should be it!

This week will be full of all sorts of yummy temptations with all the goodies and treats around to help "celebrate" the season and all the parties, luncheons and get-togethers! :) I in no way want to deprive myself of anything but at the same time, I DO NOT WANT TO (nor will I) GO OVERBOARD!! I've worked too hard for this! So the plan for this week is making smart, healthy choices and moderation!! Especially when it comes to those "dangerously wonderful" treats! :) I will make sure that I always have healthy snacks (like almonds) that I can nibble on to prevent me from nibbling on Hershey's Kisses, or Turtles, or Pot of Gold chocolates or all those wonderful French-Canadian traditional Christmas treats - like my favorite, home-made "sucre a la creme", which when translated means "creamed sugar (fudge)" YUMMMMMMMM-O!!! :D

Okay so other than the cheesecake, today was great food wise. Oatmeal and egg whites for breakfast, protein drink for morning snack, garden salad with tuna for lunch, baked sweet potato, steamed broccoli and sauteed shrimp for supper. I drank 3 litres of water today. I may have a snack later (apple or a cup of tea or something!!)

Exercise
Today was Jiu-jitsu...amazing class. I learned how to do a take down after blocking a punch to the face followed by the figure 4 leg lock today! It was awesome!! Great workout!

Tomorrow should be an awesome day. There will be the Christmas Party at the martial arts studio I attend (Therien Martial Arts). The owner, Sensei Derek, is hosting this party for all the members. I think it's a really nice gesture and I'm really looking forward to it...I will fill you in and maybe even take pictures so you all can get a glimpse of my Sensei Derek!!!

That's it for today...can't believe Christmas is only 3 days away!! INSANE!! I still have some shopping to do! :)

Unil next time...

Maintaining on a Monday...

So far so good on the maintenance journey. I am in total planning mode...currently looking into re-designing the blog for the New Year!!! 2009 was 2KMINE...so I need something new for 2010!! I'm pretty well planning out the year!! LOL!! I'm excited. Checking out different fitness oriented goals that I would like to achieve in 2010. My plan is to lay them out there and GO GET 'EM!!! :)

Today - I had a great weight training session and an awesome Kickboxing class at lunch....tomorrow will be jiu-jitsu!! I'm still absolutely loving martial arts and exercising altogether. I actually look forward to it and ENJOY it very much.

Food - omlet for breakfast (3egg whites, spinach and red peppers), apple for morning snack, green salad and chicken breast for lunch, almonds for snack, a protein shake and for supper - grilled salmon and asparagus!! YUMM-O!!! 3 litres of water. Oh I almost forgot, my team took a coffee break together this morning and I had a cup of hot chocolate...actually only half a cup..it was good.

Nothing tastes the same anymore. This afternoon, I had a hard candy (it was chocolate mint flavoured). I used to love these before...I just remember them tasting so good. Well not anymore, once it hit my tongue, it was PURE SUGAR!!! I could barely taste the mint or the chocolate!! Just Sugar!! It's nuts!!

Anyway, that's all for today...

Until next time...

Saturday Weigh-In ~ Week 53!!!!!!!!!!

ImageChef Custom Images

Starting Weight: 258 lbs (Dec 10/08)
Last Weigh In: 170 lbs (Dec 12/09)
Current Weight: 169 lbs (Dec 19/09)
This Week: 1 POUND GONE!!!
Total Loss: 89 pounds!

Hi everyone!!!

THIS IS MY FIRST WEIGH-IN OF THE MAINTENANCE JOURNEY!!! I LOST 1 POUND!!!! I am so very pleased, at best, I was hoping to maintain or even accept a maximum 2 pound gain after the week I've had. I think what saved me from gaining (and even permitted the loss) was that I never missed a workout and I made sure I had healthy meals as much as possible. I had CAREFUL FUN with my meals.

I did have quite a few drinks at the 3-4 events I attended in the past 10 days and this would not normally be the case - it's the festive season. I will definitely be maintaining this regime and enjoying myself through the holidays but come January 2nd, I'm back on the journey path...HARDCORE!! I've got quite a few plans for this upcoming year!! 2010 won't know what hit it!! LOL!!

I can't believe I'm in the 160's...that's just amazing to me. Anyway, I've got a lot to do today so this will be a quick post. Just wanted to let you all know that THE JOURNEY CONTINUES!!!

Until next time...

Christmas Parties...PART TWO!!! :)

So yesterday (Thursday), I had an awesome day of eating and exercise...I had two boiled eggs and 1/2 a grapefruit for breakfast...yum! I consumed approximately 3 litres of water for the day. I had a nice grilled chicken breast wrap (chicken breast, tomatoes, romaine lettuce, green & red pepper..no sauce/mayo) on whole wheat tortilla for lunch. It was delicious. It was so big that I only had half for lunch and saved the other half for dinner. I went to my Jiu-jitsu class at lunch time ..which was awesome..learned lots of self-defense moves, including quite a few variations of "take-downs"!! IT 'S AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

So here comes the "Christmas Parties" part....

It really is the festive time of the year. Everywhere I turn, it's some sort of luncheon, party, celebration, dinner, drinks, etc. I have refused a few parties but this year I certainly plan to enjoy a few of them - especially after missing out last year. My plan is to keep up with my workouts EVERYDAY and eat healthy foods as much as I can, but have fun and enjoy myself as well! So far, sooooooooooooooo good!! :)

I was invited to my former team's Christmas Party (remember I only changed teams in late September - so I'd spent a good portion of this past year with these colleagues/friends). I didn't want to intrude on their "teambuilding" activities even though I know they would not have minded in the least. Plus I had just celebrated with my current team the day before and it was great fun.

Anyway, I did agree to come out for a drink with them later on in the evening. I made certain to
eat the other half of my wrap (from lunch) to ensure that I wouldn't feel the need to order any unhealthy foods at the restaurant. I also had a great deal of water as well. I walked in to a wonderful welcome from my old team and I too was very happy to see them. It was nice. I had a drink (Heineken) and it was on from that moment on!!! Well the drinks just kept coming (heinekens and shooters!!) I was feeling really good and more importantly having an amazing time, laughing and socializing with friends.

Although, I didn't EAT any unhealthy foods, I did consume quite a bit of alcohol - EMPTY, EMPTY CALORIES!!!! I got home pretty late that evening or should I say, pretty early in the morning, however, I woke up this morning, feeling like crap but still dragged my butt to the basement for my weight-training session!! You PLAY, you PAY!! I felt really yucky throughout but pushed through. I had to sweat out the toxins!! LOL!!!

For breakfast, I had some scrambled eggs (3 egg whites, 1 whole egg) and drank lots and lots of water! :) I went off to work and felt very tired throughout the day (I was only going on about 3 hours of sleep). Well today, I would normally attend my 4:30pm 1-hour long kickboxing (KB) class. The way I was feeling today, I knew that wouldn't happen...BUT GUESS WHAT????????????????? I WENT TO THE CLASS, thanks in part to two of my colleagues (K & D) who went to the class as well!! After that KB session, I WAS DONE!! I did not even want to get off the mat!!!!LOL

I feel great that I was able to enjoy the parties yet still made the effort to work out (even though I really did not want to - especially TODAY!!!) I also made certain to get right back on track with my eating!! NO GUILT here, just making sure to continue with the journey!! I'm feeling amazingly fabulous! :)

So here I am, my son and I just finished dinner and I'm just writing this quick post so that we can BOTH go to bed!!! Tomorrow, Christmas Shopping - that should be a work out in itself!!

That's it for now...going to bed...sweet dreams!

Until next time

Oh Christmas Parties

Hi all,

Well today was my work team Christmas luncheon which was super fun. We went to a Thai restaurant for lunch. OMG the food was amazing. I indulged. It was all you can eat, but I was only able to have one plate (prior to my journey, I could eat a minimum of 3 plates - not any more, I was stuffed after that one plate)...I tried to have little bites of everything (from curried chicken, beef satay, garlic shrimps, ginger chicken etc..etc). I also had one spring roll and some noodles (not a lot) but it was delicious. I also had a couple of glasses of wine ( they were small glasses).

We then went go carting (indoor). It was awesome!! I crashed but got right back on another car and continued. This is just another example of something I would have been reluctant to do before because of my size and lack of fitness. These were not regular go carts, they go pretty fast. We were required to wear coveralls and helmets before getting on. Prior to losing this weight, I would be horrified at the thought of having to try on coveralls (especially in front of my colleagues) and not have it fit. That alone would have kept me from participating! Well not this time...I grabbed a coverall, slipped it on and was ready to go - it was an amazing feeling (something that I think most people take for granted). I had such an amazing time....

Unfortunately, I missed my lunch hour kickboxing class and I heard they handed out certificates and stars today (for completing Level 1 Kickboxing). I missed out, but I will more than likely get mine on Monday (I hope)!!! I did get my weight training session in this morning which was great!! So all in all today was a great day.

So tomorrow will be Jiu-jitsu and clean eating ALL DAY!! Feeling great.!!!

Until next time...

HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BLOGGIES!!!

Oh how I've missed you! :)

Okay, so Sunday was a total write-off!! I was wiped!!! I couldn't function the entire day!!! So that just pushed things back one day...I DID NOTHING!! :)

Let me start from the beginning!! First off, I want to thank everyone who came out and celebrated with me on Saturday night. I had a wonderful evening and lots of fun. Thanks also to all of you who were with me "in spirit"!! I felt the love..Thanks!! :))

The Gifts:

Although all I wanted was your company, quite a few of you brought and sent gifts. Absolutely overwhelmed and over the moon with happiness. Thank you. See pix below... so beautiful. I love the quote on that journal; "life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of moments that takes your breath away!"

I really spoiled myself that day:
  • I got my hair done at Miss Gail's - thank you Abby for hooking it up, I LOVE THE CUT.
  • I got my nails done in Orleans ( at a great new place that opened recently called "Nice One Nails" - loved the name so I had to check it out. They were great - thanks Jennifer).
  • I got my make-up done by MAC.
  • I bought a new dress and new shoes!!!
Yeah!!! I felt amazing!! Even though it was freezing cold, I decided to wear the "little" dress anyway!! It's a SIZE 13!!!! SIZE 13!!!!! One year ago, I wore a size 18/20 dress and size 22 pants!!!! Now, I'm in a teeny little size 13 dress. When I picked it up off the rack, I looked at it and thought, "oh hell no, there's no way this little thing will fit over my butt!!" I tried it on anyway and to my delirious surprise, IT FIT!!

OH btw, my camera died with the first picture I attempted to take at the restaurant so these pics were taken by my friend Coco (and her beau) - thanks guys. I am still awaiting a second set of pics from my other girlfriend. Will post as soon as I receive them - I was kind of hoping I'd have them prior to this post, but no biggie!!

Anyway, here I am all dolled up (before removing the little sweater):

I will post more shots once I get the pics from my other friend. In the meantime, I've posted about 50 pics from this set of pictures on the Event page on the Facebook group (Joania's Weight Loss Journey) so you could check them out there. I also created an album on my Facebook page.

My trainer Rob came to the celebration dinner as well, with his beautiful girlfriend (sorry ladies - but at least she's beautiful inside and out). Anyway, I was so happy that he was able to make it as I truly believe that this was "our" celebration and not just mine. Here are some pics.

The student (yours truly) and the Teacher (my trainer Rob):

I tried to get a shot with each person as they came in so I will have quite a few more pics to post and I will as soon as I receive the other batch of pictures.

Dinner & Cocktails

Believe it or not, I had a pretty healthy meal. Blackened salmon, steamed veggies and dirty rice (rice mixed with ground beef, sausage, spices etc - creole style). Anyway, I ate the salmon and veggies and had literally one fork full of rice. I didn't even have dessert!! Not by choice, I was too busy consuming cocktails!! Lol!!! Cosmos and Jack Daniel shooters - now you know why Sunday was just a total write-off for me. But I was on such a high and simply had an amazing, incredible night!!! After the restaurant, I went to a dance club with a couple of friends and had a few more drinks there as well!! WOW!! What a night...my husband pretty well carried me home!! LOL!!! It was awesome!!

What Next??

Well, as much as I enjoyed my night, I knew I had to get right back on my wagon and I did!! Monday I woke up at 530am and hit the weights like usual...I had a renewed sense of power as I lifted each dumb bell!!It was phenomenal. I really do enjoy weight lifting. I just feel so strong.

After, I made breakfast and had an egg white omlet with veggies and a big cup of water. Got on with my day. At lunch time, I hit the dojo (gym) for my kickboxing class and worked it out!!! Ingrid really brought it with the cardio. I rocked it!! At 430, I was back for a second round of kickboxing!! I just felt like I had so much energy on Monday and wanted to take advantage of that and totally make it count and that I did!!

I had a slice of pizza for lunch - it was a team pizza lunch to help me celebrate my year anniversary on this incredible journey - where normally I would have eaten a minimum of 4 slices of pizza, I was quite content with 1 slice ...that was part of the reason I added the additional kickboxing session on that day. I felt really good. I ate healthy meals and consumed approx 4 litres of water for the rest of that day.

Today, Tuesday, I ate very well and had an amazing Jiu-jitsu (JJ) class with Sensei Derek and I have the bruises to prove it!! :) JJ class is getting increasingly more difficult and challenging as we learn more intricate techniques. It's really cool, I'm really learning some cool stuff and those break falls that once scared the living daylights out of me are not so bad anymore. I could see the amazing progress that I'm making!! Simply amazing - I am loving martial arts!! It's fun, bruises, pain, submission holds, throws and all!!

So I'm just continuing on with life, health and fitness. That's my plan for now. I am thinking of a bunch of new goals for 2010 and I'll tell you this, I really plan to challenge and push myself to my max. I truly want to see how far I could take this!! I'm excited!! More details to come...

So that's it for now...working on some new things but as always, you will be the first to know!!

Let me know what you think of the pics so far!!

Until next time...
Joania(2kmine!!!)

The Morning After...:)

ohhhh my head!! ohhhhhhhhhhh!!

I had such a wonderful time that I need to go back to sleep and that's what I will be doing in 2 minutes - just wanted to come on quickly and let you know that I survived (barely)!!! It was an amazing night...I will post the pics soon!!

This Week: 3 MORE INCREDIBLY FABULOUS POUNDS GONE!!!!
Total Loss: 88 pounds!!

This is just awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I lost another pound...that's a 3 pound loss this week. I weighed myself on Thursday which was the "actual" anniversary day (Dec 10th) and I had dropped 2 pounds bringing my total to 87 pounds gone (and my weight to 171) I was thrilled with that loss. Today, I lost another so here it is: MY 52 WEEK WEIGH-IN SHOWS A LOSS OF 3 POUNDS BRINGING THE TOTAL LOSS TO 88 POUNDS!!!! AMAZING!!!

88 Pounds!! That's a new reward level!! I think it's concert or a play!! Whooohoooo!!! 2010 is gonna be JUST AWESOME!!!!!!

Next week, my weigh-in will mark the first of my "Lifestyle Maintenance Journey"!!

I'm preparing for tonight's big dinner party..got my nails done and everything (having a little trouble typing right now - lol, gotta get use to these THINGS!!) hahha Really excited about tonight!

I will try to take lots of pix...still trying to decide what to wear...last week, the weather was great; you could still see the grass outside. As of today, after a 30 cm dump of snow and a significant drop in temperature, I'm not too sure about that "little" black dress I was planning to wear!! We'll see!!!:)

Okay, that's it for now, until tomorrow...have a great Saturday!! :)

.....aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

DAY 1 of the rest of my life is complete!!! I feel absolutely amazing!!! I want to thank you all so very much for all the wonderful feedback, comments, emails, letters and phone calls!! WOW, I am truly overwhelmed by the love and support! Thank you!! Thank you!

Today was just fabulous!! I think I smiled through my entire weight training session today...just beaming!! The thought of having a full year of fit, healthy living behind me was enough to keep me smiling!! I want to continue for the rest of my life. I ate very well today! At work, there was a cake celebration for 3 of my colleagues today! I attended the lunch (had my own healthy lunch)...I took a piece of cake..let me define "piece"...it was literally a slither of chocolate cake, anyway, I took a small bite and to be honest, it was disgustingly sweet!! I couldn't even taste the chocolate, I just tasted sugar. This was incredible to me...so I didn't eat it!! Amazing, huh?

Oh, I'm in such a phenomenal place right now!!! I'm very excited about the Journey Celebration dinner tomorrow night...should be fun...I will be posting pics.

Anyway, just a short post today as I am off to bed...

THANK YOU GUYS!!!

1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY - WE MADE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!! WE DID IT!! ONE YEAR BABY!!!! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I AM ON 2 CLOUDS RIGHT NOW!!!

I was planning a big long reflective post today, but I decided to do it after - kind of like a "My Year in Review" type of post. I will do that next week, after I've had time to soak up all this AWESOMENESS!!! :)

I stepped on the scale this morning and it read, 171!!!!!!!!!! Yeah!! That's 2 more pounds down!!! WOOT!!! WOOT!!!!

TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS IN 1 YEAR: 87 POUNDS and counting!!! I WEIGH 171 lbs!!!

My Measurements:

BODY PART |DEC 2008 | DEC 2009

WEIGHT| 258 | 171

Neck |16.0 |14

Chest | 48.5 | 40.5

Right Arm | 15.5| 13.5

Left Arm |16.5 | 14.0

Waist |44.5 |37

Hips |50.0| 45.0

Thighs |30.0 |25.0

Shoe Size | 10 | 8.5 - 9

Bra Size |44DD | 38D

10 Things I've Noticed:
  1. I've got some excess skin going on...tummy, booty, arms and thighs - I will be working very hard to tone up in 2010!! :)
  2. Gravity is NOT my friend...things are sagging downwards ..the "girls" are not as "quick to say hi" anymore - there more like, "yeah, whatever!" :)
  3. My skin is so much more clear...nothing like taking the toxic chemicals out of your system!
  4. My hair is growing so nicely - thick and healthy!! Well, before I cut it all off, that is!! :) It's still very healthy.
  5. It's kind of funny that I no longer have "bad knees"!! Those who've known me for years know that I always complained about knee pain. I guess taking 87 pounds off did the trick! :)
  6. I have SO MUCH more energy!!! It really isn't a cliché.
  7. I am happier.
  8. It's hard to get going, but once you get to that start line, it's all good!!
  9. Preparation is the key!
  10. The journey NEVER ends! :)
OKAY, OKAY, THE PIX...I'm nervous..

Below you will see current pictures of me in the same outfit that I first took my "starting" pics back on Dec 10, 2008!!!!!!!!!! I have also posted some other "before" pics in which I've attempted to replicate the look to really show the changes and threw in a few "AFTER" shots. My husband and I had a bit of fun with the pix!! I can't wait for your comments!!!

BEFORE & AFTER: NO WORDS, JUST PICTURES.....

Just For Fun!

Well that's it y'all!!!!! I know that I still have a lot of work to do but I AM UP FOR IT!! 2010 will be the year of completion and fine tuning!! What do you think? WHOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOO!! ! 1 YEAR BABY!! I DID IT!! ! HEY ROB, I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Loss, Reflection, Growth and Peace

In Honor of my Beautiful Mother, Angeline (January 24 1955 - December 10, 1992)...

Today makes it 17 years since that cold December 10th day in 1992 when I lost her after a 5 year battle with ovarian cancer. She was only 37 years old. It rocked my world like nothing had ever done before and I hope will never do again. My mom was only 19 years old when she gave birth to me and we were very close. She was my mom, best friend and most trusted confidant.

For the past 16 years, December 10th has represented nothing but heartache and painful memories for me, darkness - although I always "tried" to focus on the good memories I shared with my mom in our short 18 years together, it was always extremely difficult. I usually locked myself away from life and just cried, well today, no more tears (well a few tears of joy).

Today, for the first time since her death seventeen years ago I can finally say that I am at peace. I am at peace with not having her physically present in my life. I am at peace. You see, she too was obese/overweight and battled it most of her adult life. I KNOW with every fiber in my being that she is proud of me and happy for me that I was finally able to kick obesity square in it's face - for good!! Today, I will focus on our good memories, I have given new meaning to this date and I know that so much of my success has to do with my mother and how she raised me, her values, her work ethic, her integrity!

This day will now represent two of my greatest losses but the more recent loss has allotted me the opportunity to truly reflect and reminisce without the darkness. It has allowed me to celebrate...celebrate my life and the life of one of the most amazing women that I was privileged to call mother!

Mommy, I will love you until I take my last breath, I continue to miss you every day that I wake and I will honor and celebrate you by living the best and most honest life that I can. I miss and love you so much. I hope that today you are resting a bit more peacefully knowing that I have triumphed over this and that I am finally at peace with your passing.

My love always,

Joania

THIS IS IT!!!!

How do you SCREAM in writing????? I am so excited and feel so amazing that I just want to scream!!!!!!!!!!!! It's just awesome!!!!!!!!! I AM SO HAPPY!!!!

I read the article today and I am so very pleased with how it turned out!! Thanks Alison - really, you have been fabulous!! I've been getting such amazing feedback from it - thank you so much to all of you for your comments and emails :)

THIS IS IT!!! I had an awesome weight training session this morning and a kick ass Kickboxing session today and all I could think about was that these were the last ones before my final pics so I better make it count!!! It was hardcore!!!

So, I've spent the better part of this evening taking "AFTER" pics and I think you guys will really be impressed tomorrow. I've attempted replicating quite a few before shots and the difference is just incredible to me - hope it will be to you as well. I am going to get my son ready for bed and will attempt to upload and prepare everything tonight!! I feel good, really good about what Rob and I were able to accomplish over this past year and most importantly, THE JOURNEY CONTINUES and I am excited about that, especially the martial arts part - watch out Sensei Derek!!

Here we are only a few hours away from the big day!! WoW!! I have nothing else to say except that I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!

Until a little bit later...

2 DAYS TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys,

So sorry for the absence yesterday, I was down most of the day with a migraine - last thing I wanted to do was stare at a computer screen! Anyway, I AM much better today!!!

I am, have been and WILL BE so busy this week! It's awesome. I am so happy and feeling wonderful...........it's crazy!

FIRST, my final journey article will run in tomorrow's edition of the Ottawa Citizen!! For those in the Ottawa area pick up a copy and check it out - looking forward to your feedback. I will also post the link as soon as it becomes available. I am so excited to see it! :) A special thank you again to Alison Korn for doing such a wonderful job with the series of articles on this journey - I really appreciate it!! Thank you! :)

SECOND, I have been feverishly taking "AFTER" pics!! I will be posting a few before shots and have attempted to replicate those shots wearing the same outfits/clothing and trying the same pose so you can truly compare...excited for you to see those ones. I will also be taking my standard pics in the same outfit that I took the very first pics back ALMOST 1 YEAR ago!!!!!!!

THIRD, you will notice a HUGE difference in my pics and I'm not talking about the weight loss!! :)

FOURTH, putting on the final touches in the planning of the Journey Celebration Dinner on Saturday!! Looks like it will be loads of fun!! For any of you interested in coming, please confirm by Friday December 11, 2009 - 4pm THE LATEST!! Thank you - Looking forward to see you all!! I will post the pics from the event on Sunday...I doubt that I will be in any shape to post on Saturday night (or should I say the wee hours of Sunday morning)! :)

I'm going to take the morning off on Thursday and here is my plan for Thursday December 10 (THE DAY):

5:15 am - Wake up! Take off ALL my clothes and STEP on that scale for what will probably be the last time this year (maybe).... and hope for a nice loss!!

5:30 am - Head to basement for an awesome Weight Training Session (even though Thursday is not a "scheduled" weight training day, I JUST WANNA DO IT!!! Drink water!

7:05 am - Then head to the shower and have a nice long shower (long for me is 20 minutes!)

8:00 am - Make and have an awesome breakfast with my son and husband (with a special prayer that morning - one of "thanks" more than anything). My husband will take our son to daycare and head off to work. I will then hit the computer and start blogging!!!! Hopefully I will have all the pix uploaded by 10:00 am that day (probably way earlier)!! Then head to work for the rest of the day. I'm planning on getting my Jiu-jitsu class in at lunch time!! I don't want to miss it!!

Anyway, that's it for now!! We'll be on tomorrow!!

Until next time

Weigh-in Saturday ~ Week 51:WOW!!!

ImageChef Custom Images
Starting Weight: 258 lbs (Dec 10/08)
Last Weigh In: 175 lbs (Nov 28/09)
Current Weight: 173 lbs (Dec 5/09)
This Week: 2 MORE INCREDIBLY FABULOUS POUNDS GONE!!!!
Total Loss: 85 pounds!!

WOW!! WOW!! WOW!! OH MY GOODNESS! I AM OVERWHELMED!!!

ONLY 16 pounds left to go to 101!! Well I know that won't happen! The only place I've ever seen a 16-lb loss is on the TV show the Biggest Loser!!! I am not bothered by this one bit!!! I AM THRILLED with my weight loss and more importantly my fitness and health this year!!

Next weigh-in will be my 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!! One whole year since embarking on this incredibly amazing journey, where to be honest, I wasn't sure that I would last 1 MONTH!!!

I am at a loss for words today! I can't imagine how I will be on the 10th!! Those of you who have come to know me over the past year (and those who've known me for years), know that I am RARELY at a loss for words, but today, I am. Truly.

I've lost 85 pounds - I am 1 weigh-in away from my 1 Year!! This is just wonderful. I am so proud of myself and more importantly, so excited for the future....I'm in a "so what's next?" mode!! The wheels in my head are in constant motion, thinking of all the things I want to try out - there are so many!! One is that I want to join some local sports team (soccer, softball, volleyball, hockey) - who knows??? I just want to try!!

I'm going to get my hair done on Monday and will probably just make a whole spa day of it (mani, pedi, facial etc.) WHY NOT??? Gotta look good in those pix!! My girlfriend (who's been my friend ever since I was 7- so more like my sister) bought me a hot little black dress!! Whoohoo!! can't wait to see it...I'll take pix!!!

Putting the final touches on the celebration dinner. My little man (3-year old son Malcolm will be my date for the evening)!! My husband will be there as well but has to leave early as it is also his annual staff Christmas party!! The date couldn't be helped - quite difficult to get reservations for a large party at restaurants around this time with all the Christmas parties going on - so we'll just make the best of it!!

This morning I had a 4-egg white omlet ( chopped onions, mushrooms & green peppers) with a turkey sausage for breakfast. I drank about 1.5 litres of water by that time. I made 2 pancakes for my son (and did not have 1 bite, nor a lick of the syrup!!_ :)

Today's lunch will be a salad with some left over grilled salmon!

Dinner - SPAGHETTI and MEATBALLS!!!! Okay, here's the truth. The "pasta" will actually be spaghetti squash and two meatballs made from extra lean ground sirloin with fresh tomatoes, a bit of tomato paste and veggies - it's really good!

Today's plans...no exercise!! I will be cleaning the house from top to bottom and putting up the Christmas tree and decorations - finally!! Then later this evening, hitting the malls to get started on the x-mas shopping!! I think I will be burning a few calories in there somewhere.

On Sunday, I may be trying a "SPOGA" class!! It's a combination of Spinning and Yoga!! It sounds interesting and tough. I hope I will be able to make it - I'll let you know how it goes!

Until then...

DAY 25...DAY FRIGGIN' 25 on MY 30 Day Countdown!!

To borrow a phrase from one of my favorite bloggers (Karen @ Fitcetera),

"I AM CRAZY-ASS HAPPY!!!!!!!!"

It's Friday!

1 Year Anniversary is less than a week away!!!!

Celebration dinner is all set for next Saturday!!!!

I've lost 83 pounds!!!

I had a great interview with the Ottawa Citizen!!!

Photo shoot with the photographer wasn't so much fun today, he was in a bit of a rush and didn't seem to be a fun person - but no biggie, NOTHING can get me down, I'm on such a high!!!!:)

I just feel amazing!!!!

That's all I got today....loving life, very happy and extremely grateful for the small things in life!!!

:)

here's a little tease for you...this was taken a few months ago and I think it captures exactly how I'm feeling right now!! :)

Day 24 of My 30 Day Countdown

Hi everyone...

quick post today as I have to get off to bed!

Jiu-jitsu (JJ) class was absolutely PHENOMENAL today! I learned so many cool self defense techniques and JJ moves. It was amazing. Sensei Derek actually used me to demonstrate some of the techniques and let me just tell you, he had me screaming!! LOL!

Food was great today...although I was a bit late eating my lunch (about 2 hours) boy did I ever feel it!! My body was screaming at me to eat. It's really funny, because just a short year ago, I could eat a meal and not eat anything for HOURS after and not even feel it.

I had my interview with Alison Korn (the writer from the Ottawa Citizen) today and it went really well. I can't wait to read the article. Tomorrow, the photographer will be coming to the dojo (the gym where I do Kickboxing and JJ) to take some pix. They want me in the pix but I'd really like to get a shot with my trainer Rob and Sensei Derek! Unfortunately, I don't get a say in which picture (s) is used nor does the writer - it's all up to the editor. I will invite Rob and Derek to join me at the dojo and hopefully the editor might slip the shot in!!

The article should be published early next week, possibly Monday. I will certainly keep you all posted and post the link on the blog!!

In other fabulous news, I've decided on a date, time and place for my 1 Year Journey Celebration dinner!! December 12, 2009 at Big Easy's Seafood and Steak House (http://www.bigeasys.ca) here in Ottawa at 7 pm (until midnight)!! For those of you on FaceBook (FB), I've created an Event in the "Joania's Weight Loss Journey" group. Look me up on FB or send me an email for details or leave me a comment confirming your attendance. Looks like it will be about 30 or so people (so far!!) Should be a good time!

I FEEL GOOD!! Looking for a little hot black dress to wear to the dinner!!! Whoo hoo! :)

Until next time...

Day 23 of My 30 Day Countdown

Hi guys!!

Great day today!! Had a great kickboxing class. Unfortunately, Ingrid (the instructor) hurt her foot and as she said, "that would slow her down a bit today!!!" Well, it didn't seem to slow her down one bit, she still worked our butts off!! That woman is tough as nails!!! She's awesome!

Food was great today as well as water consumption. I'm in a groove right now and loving it!

On another note, I received an email from Alison Korn - the writer from the Ottawa Citizen newspaper who has been chronicling my journey with periodic articles on my progress. She wants to do the follow up (final) article which should run in the paper, early next week. The photographer will most likely be coming by on the weekend. Since the article will run in the paper early next week, you will get a sneak peek at the new me :)!! Exciting! I'll keep you posted with the details and post the link for all of you not in the Ottawa area! :)

I really want to take a pic with my trainer...I'm hoping they'll allow it or maybe if I could take it at the dojo doing some kickboxing/Jiu-jitsu move or something!! Who knows? I'm doing the interview tomorrow, so I'll see what she says! :)

Until next time...I am only 7 DAYS away from the BIG DAY!!!

Day 22 of My 30 Day Countdown

I missed my Jiu-jitsu class today. You know, I've mentioned before that this new way of living has given me a new lease on life, new perspective and a lot more courage. I'm taking a lot more chances, setting high goals and GOING AFTER THEM FULL FORCE!!!

One of the things I've always contemplated with my career is to go into management and for whatever the reason, I never felt that I was ready until now!! So a couple months ago, I applied to a management process. This is quite a difficult process to go through. Every year, there are approximately 1000 applicants which will eventually be dwindled down to 50-75 participants!! Well I decided to GO FOR IT. I was recently screened into the process and today (this morning) wrote my first test. The way I feel about it is simple, whether or not I succeed isn't really what is driving me (don't get me wrong, my goal is to SUCCEED), however, if I don't I will be proud of myself for actually taking the step forward to try to get it done - and I would probably try again. I'll keep you posted.

So anyway, the testing lasted until 12:00 noon so I unfortunately missed my JJ class today. I ate very well today -healthy, even brought my snack (almonds and water) to the testing so I could stick to the plan. I'm feeling really great. My colleague and I actually walked back to work afterwards. It was about a 20 min walk. Not a big deal, but a year ago, I would have DEFINITELY cabbed it back to work! :)

I'm getting so many emails and messages from people telling me that they can't wait to see me and my pix. I'm getting kinda nervous! I know there's a HUGE difference in my appearance. I run into people who haven't seen me in a while quite frequently and they tell me how different I look and how much weight I've lost. My awesome friends tell me all the time (especially my friends Kim and Linda) who would never lie to me, good or bad!! I am writing a post about the two of them and what they did - will post in a few days!

Anyway, I notice a difference especially as I've been going through a lot of "BEFORE" pictures and I myself am amazed at the differences. I mean, I'm not like "Biggest Loser" small, but I think I've done a great job this past year and as I've said all along, the journey continues - it only gets better from here!

Anyway, it's late - I really need to get to bed!! NINE DAYS TO GO!! I AM SO EXCITED!!!

Until next time...
Joania (2KMINE!!!)
